Myprotein FITTEST is the YouTube series where we put some of our staff though the hardest workout routines of our G.O.A.T ambassadors. This week: calisthenics workout.
After the grueling World’s Strongest Man workout last time around, Rosie, Ross, Matty and Inbar were ready for absolutely anything. Or at least they thought they were. A Calisthenics coach Austin Dunham designed a workout to destroy the team. But they did put up a pretty good fight.
You shouldn't attempt these moves without a professional PT on hand. Although after watching the video, we’re not sure you’ll even want to.
Before starting, the team heard some words from Austin himself. It was their first glimpse at what they’d signed up for.
“It's not going to be easy; it’s a different type of strength that a lot of people aren’t used to using, AKA your bodyweight. If you can’t do it, do note that there are different progressions you can do to work towards some of these exercises that we’re doing in this workout routine. Good luck and hopefully you can do it”
Workout
Exercise 1 – Forward Lean Push Up
Personal trainer, Calvin Crooks was again on hand to keep an eye on form. Or more truthfully, some moral support. His words of encouragement helped the staff to complete one whole rep, after they were under the impression that they’d completed the full 6. That’s got to sting.
Yoga poses quickly became more popular than calisthenics for one particular member of staff.
“Oh no, I can't” might’ve been the most commonly said phrase.
Exercise 2 – Pistol Squats
Chris introduced this exercise as one that ‘needs a lot of flexibility and a lot of strength’ (Translation: it’s well ‘ard). That didn’t fill the staff with hope for good things to come.
But they managed to complete their reps, to an appropriate standard.
Ross was clearly ready for the exercise to finish, saying “that’s enough”.
Exercise 3 - Assisted One-Arm Pull-Up
The staff were referred to as ‘victims’ during this workout. We think that says it all.
Exercise 4 – L-Sit to Dip
This one’s a lot easier than it looks.
A particularly great snippet from this exercise...
“How is he doing that”Take Home Message
The World’s Strongest Man workout was a walk in the park in compared to calisthenics. No one had anything positive to say about this workout. But it couldn’t wipe the big smiles from their faces. So at least that’s something.
We think it's safe to say no one’s added calisthenics to their own workout routine after this.
