4 Must Have High Protein Snacks

All athletes require the same basic nutrients from foods in order to continue growing and being able to perform at an optimal level. This is true for any sport, especially when it comes to bodybuilding/weight training. In order for you to achieve adequate growth in any and all muscle groups, you must be able to properly pair a your training routine with your nutrition.

No matter what kind of strength training or weight lifting regime you perform, you will see minimal results if your nutrition is not 100% in check. If you wish to grow increase muscle mass, you will need a surplus of calories and its best to obtain this surplus by adding more protein to your diet. For some this is easy and for others it can be a challenge due to daily activities such as work and other commitments.

If this is true for you, adding more meals will be difficult, however, adding more snacks will be a much easier method to obtain a higher amount of protein on a day-to-day basis. So what should you eat to provide a good source of protein that’s quick and convenient? The following snacks are the answer to that very question!

✓ Beef Jerky

No matter what flavor you get this in, Original, Teriyaki, or even Peppered, this is my number one snack of choice. You can never go wrong with beef jerky! Jerky is one of the greatest snacks for any bodybuilder and athlete in general due to the simple fact that it is practically pure protein. Jerky is one of the leanest protein snacks you can have, with the average 1oz serving of jerky containing under 100 calories, 1g of fat or less, 5g of carbs, and over 15g of protein.

This is why jerky remains one of the greatest, if not the greatest, high protein and low fat snack alternative for anyone on the go. The only downside with jerky is the high amount of sodium all jerky contains. A single serving of jerky can account for over 20% of your daily recommended intake of sodium. If sodium is something you have to be cautious about, I would keep the serving size to 1 a day. However, if you are like me, and sodium doesn’t have any negative results on your diet or training, jerky is the greatest high protein low fat snack to have during your busy day.

✓ Protein Cookie

This isn’t your typical cookie that you buy at your local grocery store. Instead, this is a large cookie, 75g of cookie to be exact, that is not only packed in protein, but also packed in calories. This makes it perfect for anyone who needs calories added to their diet or struggles to fit all of their meals in on a daily basis. Each cookie contains over 300 calories while providing you with over 37g of Protein, 20g of Carbs and 10g of fat per cookie!

This cookie delivers high protein content within a similar calorie range as most protein shakes on the market offer, while giving you more convenience as you can carry it around wherever you go and can eat it whenever you want. This cookie is available in flavors such as White Almond (my personal favorite as it tastes similar to a white chocolate chip cookie), Double Chocolate Chip (tastes like a rich dark chocolate brownie) and Chocolate Orange. Pair a cookie with a glass of milk and you have a great and fast snack on the go. If you are at home or in the office, try heating up a cookie in the microwave for 10 seconds or so for an even more enjoyable snack.

✓ Protein Bites

These are simply high protein chips in a small bag, but with lots of flavor and volume. Available in many flavors such as Sour Cream and Spring Onion, BBQ, Chargrilled Chicken, and Cheese and Jalapeno, there is no flavor you can go wrong with. My personal favorite is Sour Cream and Spring Onion, as to me these taste the same as any other standard sour cream and onion chips.

Where is the advantage of these over a standard chips bag? Each bag is only 100-120 calories while offering very little fat, 2g or less, and over 15g of protein per bag. The other advantage is the amount of volume these bags have to offer. With over 1oz of chips in a bag, you will be surprised how filling in volume these bags are. 1 bag is enough food for a fast and easy snack to keep you going between meals whenever you become hungry and are extremely easy to eat as they are in a regular chip bag that you can simply eat wherever you are. There are my favorite, I actually enjoy 1 of these delicious brownies every single day and I always look forward to it. The protein brownie is a great size and is easy to take with you on the go. However, my favorite way to enjoy this delicious snack, is to pair it with some vanilla Greek yogurt.
