Short Term Summer Fitness Goals… That Aren’t Body-Shape Related!

Summer is officially here again and although you may want the best body appearance you’ve ever had, there are other fitness-related goals you should keep in the back of your mind. Looking good is half the battle, but being able to do things with your chiseled body as well as being as healthy on the inside as possible is what will keep your body up and running for years to come.


Goal #1: Drink Enough Water Daily

I know that this one sounds simple enough but it’s surprising to me how many people fall short of their daily water needs. The body is comprised of 70% water so when you’re not taking the biggest, most effective supplement, you are wasting your time. Water not only helps keep you hydrated on hot summer days but it also helps with food absorption (making you feel fuller, faster) and as well boosting metabolism and helping burn fat and fuel muscle cells.


Goal #2: Get Outside

Yeah it’s hot outside – it’s summer! But this is no excuse to stay cooped up inside all day, go to the gym for an hour and stay in all night. Our body is just like Newton’s law of motion: an object at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion. So strive to get outside and do something active even when the sun is out. Gardening is a great hobby that you can benefit from being outside and active within the garden and also growing your own healthy fruits, veggies and herbs.


Goal #3: Eating Fruits/Veggies

Like we just touched on, fruits and veggies are all going to be peaking at some point in the summer. What better of a time to try and make it a habit of eating more fruits and veggies than in the summer when everything is at it’s best? Allow this habit to carry over for the rest of the year and your body will reap some amazing benefits. If you don’t have the time to plant your own garden, try and visit your town’s local farmer’s market. These people have their own gardens and will sell fruits and vegetables that are fresh and at the peak of ripeness for less than what you’ll spend at the big box stores.


Goal #4: Test Your Body & Mind

You’ve maybe slimmed down since last year and now have some newfound confidence you didn’t used to have. A great way to test your body further is doing some type of fitness race. This could be anything from trying to ride your bike further than you’ve ever done before, signing up for a 5K or even doing some sort of obstacle course race to really test your raw fitness. Another great way to develop your body is to develop your brain. Hit the outdoors with a good book and learn to debrief from life. This will not only improve brain function but also lower blood pressure and stress levels at the same time.

Yes we all want to have the perfect beach body, but there’s more to life and fitness than just looking good. Make sure you’re getting plenty of water, along with fruits and vegetables, to keep your body healthy from the inside out. Don’t be afraid to get outside some even in the heat to enjoy a hobby, run a race or just sit back, relax and enjoy a good book.
