What Are Superfoods?
Superfoods is a term that has be coined or used to describe a selection of particular foods from multiple foods groups that are comprised of multiple health benefits. If a particular food is either nutrient rich or extremely good for one’s health and well-being, this food is a “super food” according to many nutrition and health councils.
Most superfoods you can eat will provide our body with many health benefits, including but not limited to:
✓ Reducing the risks of heart attacks
✓ Strengthening bone density
✓ Improving cognitive ability
✓ Muscular strength
With such a large variety of food in the world, it’s hard to obtain all these benefits from one food, yet so many small foods that no one thinks about can have a great, positive impact on one’s health.
Superfood #1 – Eggs
To start my list of superfoods in which I recommend to anyone, the number one food on my list is eggs. Although eggs are a very basic and common food, they are one of the greatest protein sources anyone can have and are one of the cheapest foods available in the market.
The average whole egg contains 6g of protein and around 70 calories. This is very calorie dense and high in protein and is perfect for anyone on a low calorie diet. Eggs also contain almost zero carbs and a high amount of healthy fat in the yolk. If you are on a strict low carb diet, whole eggs provide your body with many benefits.
If you are on a low fat diet, throw away or avoid the yolk and consume the whites. The whites are the protein packed area of the egg.
Superfood #2 – Milk
When it comes to building muscle, your body will want the best whole protein sources, and you have many other options beyond eggs. Fat-Free milk for example is another great healthy source of nutrients.
A glass of fat free milk, usually around 8 ounces, contains around 1/3 of the daily recommended calcium intake for the average adult. Milk is also very rich in Vitamin D, which is a fat-soluble vitamin that is usually produced in our skin from exposure to sunlight.
Vitamin D from milk is great for the body as it helps combat certain diseases such as heart disease and the flu, it also helps with weight loss as it acts as an appetite suppressant.
Superfood #3 – Fish
When it comes to obtaining a health amount of omega-3s, usually the first foods to come to mind are fish. Salmon is usually the first thing people will recommend to people who need to consume more omega fatty acids, followed by fish oil supplements.
The reason as to why Omega-3s are so beneficial is that they help our body by lowering triglyceride levels in our body, reducing risk of heart disease. Omega-3 has also been proven to show that it can help with joint pain and stiffness in our body. Although most people consume this nutrient through fish oil pills, one may also consume fish such as tuna, salmon and trout.
Superfood #4 – Greek Yogurt
The final superfood is also my number one favorite food to eat, and this is Greek Yogurt.
First, Greek yogurt is one of the best tasting foods one can eat on a diet. It’s so rich in delicious flavor, one would think it would be bad to consume. One serving of Greek Yogurt contains roughly ¼ of your daily recommended Vitamin B2 and B12 intake. Greek Yogurt is also very high in protein content that its very beneficial for building muscular and bone tissue, while improving hair and skin health.
Greek Yogurt is also a great probiotic, which are healthy bacteria that help improve our immune system to prevent sickness from occurring. The last beneficial aspect of Greek yogurt I want to mention is how rich it is in iodine. Iodine isn’t a mineral many people think of when looking at body health. However, iodine is important for proper function of our thyroid, as our thyroid is what’s responsible for our metabolism working at maximum capacity.
By consuming Greek yogurt, you are not only consuming a protein rich food, but you are consuming a food that can also help speed up weight loss by increasing metabolic activity within the body while making your body feel fuller and more satisfied from food consumption.
Superfood Take Away
Although this list of superfoods is fairly small, don’t think that these are your only options for healthy and beneficial foods. There are many more options available and can usually be found simply by shopping the outside edges or walls of any supermarket and the grain aisle.
Almost all of the foods on the outside edges or walls of any market are extremely packed full or healthy nutrients, such as proteins and fiber, while also provide our body with calorie dense options making fat loss a lot easier and more enjoyable.
90% of all superfoods found in markets can be consumed in extremely large quantities, that even if you eat so much of them to become full and even bloated, the chances of you gaining any fat to your body are slim and next to none. In fact, most of these foods will actually help you lose weight due to being so calorie dense while being high in protein and fiber.
So next time you go shopping for food at the grocery store, remember to stick to the outside edges and walls and look for options such as fish and Greek yogurt. You may not think you’ll like the taste of some of these foods now, but I promise you will find many healthy options that your taste buds will enjoy and be left satisfied in both hunger and sweet tooth cravings.
