Your body is made up of around 70% water, meaning it is essential to keep your body hydrated. When hydration decreases, your body signals its need for water, which causes you to feel thirsty. It’s important to recognize these signals, as this common thirst feeling is actually the first stage of dehydration.

In addition to thirst, other signals that can indicate the need to drink more water include: muscle cramps, fatigue, back pain, joint pain, constipation, dark-colored urine, headaches, dizziness, and also bad breath.

Severe dehydration can be life threatening, but mild dehydration can cause problems that can affect your overall performance in sports and exercise.


Who Is At Risk From Dehydration?


Generally speaking, anyone who enters a stage of dehydration is at risk. However, children are prone to drinking sugary drinks such as fruit juices and soft drinks rather than pure, plain water. Teenagers tend to opt for sport and energy drinks, which can be just as filled with sugar.

The elderly are also at risk for becoming dehydrated, as they may not feel thirst as keenly. This increases the chances of consuming less water and consequently suffering from dehydration.

This is a common question. It’s difficult to determine a basic guideline that can apply to everyone accordingly. Most of the population knows to drink at least 8 x 8-ounce glasses of water each day. This generic guideline should be taken lightly, as daily tasks, age, and activity levels do vary from person to person.

Checking the color of your urine is a good measure of your current hydration (or dehydration) level. Ideally, it’s good to drink enough water so that your urine will be a lightly-colored yellow. Dark urine will be shown when you are dehydrated, as this is because your kidneys are retaining fluids in order to maintain your bodily functions. To put it simply, the darker the color of your urine is, the more water you should drink.

Your body actually loses water naturally throughout the day, even without exercising (sweating). Therefore, it is crucial to constantly keep up with daily fluids. Although fruit juices and sports drinks are liquids, the sugar content can act as a diuretic, which can eventually lead to dehydration. The same also applies to beverages that contain high amounts of caffeine, such as coffees, teas, and energy drinks.

Drinking water helps to rehydrate you. However, it is best to drink water that is pure and free of toxins. You can actually add toxins back into your body when you continuously drink unfiltered water. Most tap water contains several harmful toxins such as heavy metals, chlorine, and multiple byproducts.

Bottled water can seem beneficial and convenient, but can also have its negatives affects as well. The plastic itself can contain chemicals like BPA (bisphenol-A), not to mention the cost of purchasing bottled water can create a dip in your wallet over time.

The tip is to stick to filtered, pure water.
