There is so much information out there about workouts, how to lose weight and how to gain muscle. Use this information. Use resources such as Instagram to follow fitness icons and use YouTube to find out how to perform exercises with correct form or find workouts.

Just typing into the search bar ‘back workout’ or ‘leg workout’ will return thousands of results, and you can then watch video evidence of how to perform exercises and structure your workouts to achieve maximum benefit.

Do not just walk into the gym with no knowledge or idea of what you’re going to do. This will lead to you wondering round the gym aimlessly trying out every machine for a few reps and not achieving anything productive. Acquire the knowledge, get a plan sorted and stick to it.

One of the best thing to do is to find a fitness personality with the physique you aspire for. With social media such as Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat it has never been easier to follow fitness personalities and see what they do on a day-to-day basis.

Now this is the most important thing to achieving your goals, but it is also the most difficult. The ability to stay motivated is what divides people who succeed and those that fail. You will always face difficulties on your fitness journey. Work, college or school can take up a lot of your time, so can family and social commitments.

The important thing is to plan for this and make sure you can work around your other commitments. There will be days when you can’t make the gym or you’re feeling sick and you’re better off resting. This isn’t the end of the world, just make sure you get back on track as soon as possible.

A great way to stay motivated is to track your progress. The thing that comes to mind first when tracking your process is to record your weight. This is a valuable form of assessing your progress, there’s no doubt about that, but it is not the only way.

Taking pictures from a front, side and back view can be much better evidence of how your body is physically changing. Remember muscle weighs more than fat. So if you’re training regularly your weight could stay the same or even increase if you’re putting on muscle. These photos can be private, you don’t have to show them to anyone, but they are a great way to physically see the progress you’ve made if you take these photos on the same day every week.

Your nutrition needs to be specific to you depending on your goals and this is where knowledge is again so important.

If you’re aiming to increase muscle mass then you need to understand how much protein you should be eating alongside carbohydrates and fats.

If you are aiming to lose weight you need to be in a healthy calorie deficit meaning you’re consuming 300-500 calories less than you’re using on a daily basis.

Then the type of food you’re eating becomes so important:

? Where are you getting your protein from?

? What sort of carbohydrates are you eating?

? What sort of fats are you consuming?

You need to think about the answers to all these questions, and again put in the required research to find out what foods you should be eating. For example, protein from chicken breast and tuna is far better than from processed foods. Have you thought about substituting white bread, rice and pasta with wholemeal alternatives? Do you prep your meals?

These are the kind of questions you need to consider to reach your fitness goals.


 5. Think Short Term

Thinking about the end goal is of course very important, but setting yourself short term goals can be very helpful in reach the end goal. Set yourself weekly and monthly targets. These can be anything from how many times you’re going to make the gym this week to saying by the end of the month I would have increased my bench press by 10%.

Smaller, short term targets really help build towards your long term goal and can even make it seem more achievable!
